Book Review on Buddhas Brain - 825 Words

Book Review on Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom (Book Review Sample) Content: Students Name:Professor/ Instructors Name:Subject:Date: In the past, it was deemed impossible for science to be able to understand the complexities of love. However, with the advancement in science and understanding it has brought forth, it has been noted that science has as much to do with love as the heart. Buddha advocates for human beings to be able to use their mind to influence their brain. Buddha further believes that the power behind love could be scientifically, psychologically and psychiatrically evaluated and determined. To begin with, love can be scientifically seen as a combination of nerve responses and chemicals in the body influence an individual to experience these feelings. Then nervous system in a person represents information which a person experiences in everyday life. Upon doing this, it stores the information in the brain where it processes it and operates upon it. Finally, the information gotten can be communicated to other parts of the body wh ich are supposed to respond to it. According to Buddha, this is the mind which is mainly aware of what happens outside, it is aware of ones environment (Hanson, 2012). Rick Hanson explains that the science behind how neural activities become conscious remains a mystery to man. However, we can confidently say that mental and neural activities co-arise. As ones mind keeps on becoming modelled both temporarily and in lasting ways, the brain also experiences these changes. What flows through the mind shapes the brain. Thoughts on a certain object tend to linger on for long and if they recur in the brain continuously, they influence a persons brain such that the object remains etched in the persons brain (Hanson, 2012). Thus, you are what you think. Basing our argument on this notion, if we continuously think about one person, we end up having the person in our brain for longer and thus feeling s of love and desire to have that person close may begin to surface. Scientific research has r evealed that love can be scientifically determined. It begins with the secretion of dopamine by the brain and adrenal glands. Dopamine enhances the release of testosterone and affects various organs such as the genitals and sweat glands. They tend to sweat more, and their senses are elevated due to dopamine. Furthermore, mood and emotions are also influenced, this leads to feelings of excitement and also happiness. While this is taking place, testosterone increases sexual desire, making one more aggressive and thus may push one to pursue the person causing this intense response. Neurotransmitters norepinephrine and phenylethylamine also play a role in love as they heighten ones attention and thus they are able to notice small details in their loved ones and in themselves (Hanson, 2012). Furthermore, love is also psychiatrically involved. Most people only view in its most narrow sense. As a reflection of passion, desire and lust, as the greeks term it, eros. But psychiatrically speak ing, we are only scratching at the surface of what love truly is. Love, as regarded in psychiatry, involves widening the aperture, sharing and participating with others and thus creating relationships between families, communities and countries. In its most comprehensive state, agape, love is something that can dissolve our separate existence. Love is expansive, paradoxical in its ability to calm and also excite at the same time, empowering a person and also selfless in its nature. The mind influences what we think of others, who to love and who to be cautious around, thus, the way a person perceives the world around them could be seen as a reflection of the persons attitude towards love (Hanson, 2012). Instead of having to seek something externally in order to feel complete, we experience feeling our most authentic when we can get past these obstacles that interfere with our ability to be simply loving beings. At the core of our humanity, we have the right to be loved, the right t o feel love itself. Our tendency to love is stro... Conte Poem Analysis Essay - 1006 Words

Lenae Gomez ENG 110.3 Professor Unger February 11, 2013 Au Contraire In â€Å"Conte† by Marilyn Hacker, Cinderella shows the reader a glimpse of her life after the childhood tale ends, a less happier ending than the original story implies. She feels trapped in a constant state of misery and boredom in the royal palace. Without life experience guiding her, Cinderella is in a dilemma caused by her ignorance of the potential consequences of her actions. With the use of irony, structure, and diction, â€Å"Conte† shows how innocence and naà ¯vetà © result in regrettable mistakes that create life experience. The poem deviates from the basic fairy tale through the use of ironic predicaments. Cinderella makes a bold statement from the beginning:†¦show more content†¦The poem is in free verse with no meter and consists of twenty-eight lines in one big stanza. The poem has all the elements of a letter with the most conclusive evidence being at the end of the poem: â€Å"Yours, C† (28). A letter is a personal form of writing and gives the reader an inside perspective into Cinderella’s palace life. Most of the sentences are declarative sentences, making the exceptions more obvious in the poem. One of the exceptions is found on lines 17 and 18, where the sentence ends in an exclamation point: â€Å"Why not throw it all up, live on the coast / and fish, no, no, impossible with wives!† The exclamation point emphasizes the idea that she feels trapped in her situation as a wife. She wants to find a way out of her misery. On lines 20 and 21 there is a question mark on each line: â€Å"or cut my hair, teach (what?) little girls / and live at home with you?† Cinderella reiterates that her options are limited because of her minimal experience in the world. â€Å"Conte† uses a couple parentheses within mid-sentence. Cinderella uses the parentheses to convey deeper explanation of her thoughts. For example, Cinderella writes, â€Å"Ladies / ignore me, or tell me all their pet ty secrets / (petty because they can’t attend meetings) / about this man or that† (4-7). She does not censor her meaning of petty. Her true feelings show in the letter and validate the rough situation that Cinderella is stuck in. Essay about The Education System in the United States

The Education System in the United States Diane Ravitch, Senior Research Scholar at New York University, has written several books and hundreds of articles pertaining to the education system in the United States. In one of her articles printed by Education Week, she says that most fourth-graders who live in U.S. cities cant read and understand a simple childrens book, and most eighth-graders cant use arithmetic to solve a practical problem. This is a reason behind testing schools and its students on what they have learned. Those that support standardized testing say that it is a useful way to rate a school and its students with other schools internationally. The opposing side of the issue exclaims that there is too much time†¦show more content†¦New York Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew is someone that has been placing standards on schools and their achievements on tests. According to Jacques Steinberg of the New York Times, Crew has used tests to evaluate whether district superintendents...should be rehired, to d etermine whether struggling schools need more resources, and to identify schools that might benefit from a longer day or year. Kesler, a teacher at Public School 75 in New York, states he knows the test is one of the few ways his students performances, as well as his own, his principals and even the district superintendents, can be measured against the rest of the city. The simple observation of a school and its low scores would help a district then focus on fixing that schools problems. Hopefully, in finding that problem the school can look forward to higher scores in the next year of testing. Some schools have faced difficult problems about certain students taking standardized tests. These certain students are ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students. David Nakamura, a columnist for the Washington Post, writes, schools might be excusing students from the tests as a way to artificially raise test scores. Holly Stein, an ESOL supervisor in Prince George, says, i f you dont have kids take the test, theres no accountability.... Define Bibliography

Define BibliographyHave you ever struggled to define bibliography? When I say 'bibliography', I am not only referring to the traditional literature section at your local library. I am also referring to what happens when someone tries to write a short paper and then explain in detail what they used to do, and why. The simplest example is when a student writes an essay and has trouble using the dictionary or encyclopedias. In the case of this, students usually do not have a long background in literature, so the students who had trouble earlier will have trouble again. I use the example because it helps me to clearly illustrate the point. When I try to define bibliography, I am really trying to explain in my paper that what I mean by bibliography is what I meant when I said I was writing for a class. Now, if a student is struggling to write, and has no background in literature, she can still find a title to explain in the bibliography. For example, if you are writing a paper for an Englis h class, and you are trying to explain to the class why you used such words, it is better to use a book title to explain to them why you used that word. When you use the bibliography in a paper, it does not mean that you will start with bibliography and go through the life of literature using all the words in it. Rather, the reason you use bibliography is to give the students an idea about the life of literature and the art of writing. So the definition of bibliography is important but even more important is how you use bibliography. If you are writing an essay about literature, don't be afraid to use bibliography. But when you are writing a paper for school, it is best to avoid using bibliography. For example, if you were to be writing a paper for your history class, you should probably avoid using bibliography. I know that may sound harsh, but if you have never used a bibliography before, and you try to explain it to your history class, you will probably be misunderstood. Instead, us e examples and anecdotes, to help the students understand what a bibliography is and how to use it.To summarize, the first thing to remember is that the bibliography is not just a reference book that is used by writers. It is a tool used by people when they are trying to explain their lives to others. So, in the context of writing for a class, a bibliography is a very helpful way to explain the life of literature, but in a different context, it may not be necessary.
